Why Volunteer?

Let’s be honest. When you see a call for volunteers, it’s easy to think of reasons not to raise your hand. I’ve been there. You probably have, too

I meet so many people who have the desire to volunteer and know their “Whys” by heart, but that doesn’t always clear the path.

The “why nots” are real, valid and often hold us back. I believe exploring those hesitations is just as important. Because sometimes, your reason “not to” is the very reason you’ll find the experience uniquely fitting and fulfilling.

“I’m too busy; I’m afraid I can’t commit.

I hear you. The idea of one more commitment can feel impossible next to the demands of work, family and life.

What if volunteering wasn’t a rigid commitment but something that adapted to your rhythm? This could be a single two-hour session sorting supplies, helping out at a one-off event, or taking on a remote task – like making a flyer – from your home office. At Heart to Heart (H2H), all of these create a direct result. You are completing a crucial, self-contained piece of a larger mission.

“I don’t have any special skills to offer.”

Let me ask you this: Are you the person who brings order to a messy situation? We need that skill to manage our donation inventory. Are you a natural at advocating for things you’re passionate about? We need your voice to share our mission at events. Are you good with kids? We need that warmth and patience in our hospital playroom.

The truth is, the day-to-day work of any non-profit is powered by the same skills we use in our daily lives and careers. Your “ordinary” skill becomes extraordinary here because it’s the engine that keeps the entire mission moving.

You don’t need a special title to save a life. You just need the willingness to share what you already know.

“I worry it might be sad or emotionally draining.”

This is a natural concern. It’s true, we work with children facing serious health challenges. However, what I’ve found is that the atmosphere within our volunteer community isn’t defined by sadness; it’s defined by hope and joy.

You’ll be surrounded by people focused on active solutions – what we can DO towards a shared purpose. We celebrate the progress – the growing number of children who received surgeries and get a new chance at life.

The real feeling isn’t drain; it’s the deep fulfillment that comes from being part of a child and their family’s journey toward healing.

“My reasons for wanting to help feel a bit selfish.”

Touché. Early on, I volunteered for the praise, the “thank you”, and to polish up my resume. I used to worry that these motivations somehow made my contribution less “pure.”

My journey has taught me a liberating truth: the initial intention to meet people, build skills or feel good is only human – it’s where many of us begin. What matters is what happens next. The “selfish” reasons are the seeds of a powerful, sustainable win-win. The cause gains an invested helper, and we find a deeper sense of purpose. We both grow.

Doing good doesn’t demand selflessness. It asks for authenticity. We aren’t saints. We are a community of people using what we have to fix a small part of the world. And in the process, we are fixed and fulfilled in ways we never expected.

“I don’t know where to start.”

Your first step is easy: ask “What’s possible?” rather than committing to a path.

Visit www.h2hsh.com and see what sparks your interest. When you’re ready, let us know. We’re here to help you start.

So, why not?

Your reason is your own. The impact is shared.

Things We Need

Don’t forget – one of the things we do that makes the kids very happy is to give each child/family a bag of 50+ items for their stay in the hospital and for them to take home after they are discharged.  We give out 500+ bags of this sort a year.  Kids and parents alike absolutely love this extra “perk”.  Since we have no budget for anything but heart surgeries, we rely on generous people to donate items.  What do we need this winter?  Here are a few of the things you can help with….

Over the course of four years, they have shaped yarn into hearts and transformed Tuesday knitting gatherings into warm commitments— they are the knitters of the Renheng Community Love Knitting Group. All of them are passionate volunteers.  They are dedicated to sharing the beauty of love through knitting. Since June 2021, this group has knitted clothes for heart bears to assist children with congenital heart disease in their surgeries.  Thus, they have knitted hope into the lives of many children. More than 150 volunteers have joined this relay of love.

The knitters gather every Tuesday.  The highly skilled knitters design patterns and make all kinds of beautiful dresses, suits, and holiday-themed outfits.  The bears are all adorable and unique when wearing their outfits.  The knitters also go into companies to hold knitting classes for Heart to Heart.  They patiently teach more people to knit – generating an unending relay of knitting. The teachers also actively participate in various sales;  when they see the heart bears wearing outfits they knitted being purchased by caring individuals, they have a sense of accomplishment.  This is a source of their continued motivation.

We want to express our deepest respect to the members of the Renheng Community Love Weaving Group! They have demonstrated what ‘warm persistence’ and ‘kind craftsmanship’ truly mean through their actions. We also sincerely thank Renheng Property Management Company for their support in providing a warehouse and transportation for Heart to Heart over the years. We are also grateful to Revo
Terrace Bamboo Forest Bistro for providing a venue for our weekly gatherings. May this love continue to knit more beautiful possibilities.

Wishing every teacher health and joy so they can continue to write heartwarming stories with needle and thread. Each stitch helps illuminate the life journey of our sponsored children.

Small Group Volunteering in the Playroom
Do you have a small group of volunteers who would like to volunteer in the playroom with some of our sponsored children?  It’s the perfect way social groups, companies and schools can show their care and concern for our children.  The children who come to the playroom love special activities like arts & crafts, games, drawing sessions, face painting, magic, music, etc.  Make the children and their parents smile and relax.  They will talk about their experiences for years to come.

How do you register to do this?  Just send a message to infoh2h@rendefoundation.org or WeChat id 13916295852 at least 2 weeks ahead of your desired session.  We’ll get the date reserved for you as long as there isn’t a conflict.

Come have fun!

Groups MUST be:

  • 7 persons or less
  • Able to do the session sometime between 2-4pm
  • Without cold, cough or fever symptoms
  • At least 15 years old
  • Willing to clean up the playroom after the session
  • Wanting to have a wonderful time with children

A Special Gift from a 14-yr Old Scout
Pinn Yi, a devoted scout passionate about community service, was eager to find a meaningful way to give back to society. She learned that Heart to Heart raises funds for children with congenital heart disease in need of corrective surgery by selling heart bears dressed in handmade outfits. Deeply touched by their mission, Pinn Yi decided to contribute in her own way—by sewing pants for the heart bears. She learned how to use a sewing machine from scratch, carefully cut the fabric, and thoughtfully stitch each pair of pants, knowing that every bear she helped dress would bring hope to a child in need.

This meaningful project not only allowed Pinn Yi to develop new handicraft skills, but also gave her the joy of making a real difference in the lives of others.  Her experience served as a beautiful reminder that even the smallest act of kindness, when done with sincerity, can create a touching and powerful impact.

German School Christmas Gifts

Several years ago the German School started giving Heart to Heart Christmas gifts for the children having heart surgery. Naturally, the children had never received wrapped gifts before and to say the receipt of the gifts was a huge hit would be to put it mildly.  It has now become a much beloved tradition between the school and H2H.  It’s a great pleasure to meet up with the faculty and students at the German School to receive the gifts and talk to them briefly about the H2H children.  And then it’s even more fun to deliver the gifts to the kids. They might not understand who Father Christmas/Santa Claus is, but they definitely understand the love that the gifts represent.

Thank you German School!  You will be remembered by many children throughout China who have no experienced the wonderful feeling that getting a Christmas gift gives.

A Blooming Tapestry

At the recently concluded 2025 Art for Hearts Exhibition, our knitting team focused on the theme ‘A Blooming Tapestry.’   Brilliantly blooming flowers and vibrant life were knitted into our creations in the hope to assist children wiith congenital heart disease.  We knitted flowers into the bears’ hair accessories and dresses making each bear appear as if it is immersed in a sea of flowers. Volunteer Qiu Lingling (Linda) transformed her passion for knitting into art by selecting a variety of yarns and creatively combining them to shape unique textures.  Her pieces were truly treasures.
A woven piece titled ‘Abundant Blossoms’ was created by collaboration by dozens of volunteers and was particularly eye-catching. Every little flower, every leaf, and every fluttering butterfly carried heartfelt intentions.  It connected love and blessings together to form this unique work of art. Especially captivating are three crocheted ‘flower’ pieces paying tribute to artist Yayoi Kusama. Using the language of knitting combined with elements of painting, these works interpret a profound appreciation for the beauty of life and art through colorful contrasts and repeated shapes. Additionally, there are exquisite accessories adorned with floral designs – bags, elegant round fans with flower patterns and crocheted bouquets.  Each were full of vitality and uniquely distinctive.

Knit Together

Since October 2022, parents at YCIS Puxi gather together on an afternoon each month to knit. Whether you are an experienced knitting expert or a beginner who has just picked up the needles and yarn, you can find your place in the “Knit Together” knitting club. Everyone not only shares their love for knitting but also conveys warmth and care with every stitch.  They collaborate with Heart to Heart to support children who need heart surgery.  In past campus activities, such as carnivals, Christmas markets, and family dances, parents in the group personally knitted sweaters and crafted items for H2H bears and then sold them with all proceeds donated to Heart to Heart to help the children.

The parents feel that the results of their knitted pieces bring hope and smiles to the children who have heart surgery and fills their families with joy.  They gather together out of love and convey their emotions through knitting.

Art for Hearts

It was an amazing evening of art, beauty, renewal of friendships, dedication to an amazing cause and generosity.  If you missed the 2025 Art for Hearts show, you missed a spectacular event.
Art for Hearts is Heart to Heart’s signature event.  It is an annual event sponsored by Rende Foundation and the Shanghai Centre to provide heart surgeries for disadvantaged Chinese children with congenital heart disease.  This year the 7th Art for Hearts took place on November 7-8 in the 4th floor atrium at the Shanghai Centre.  A gorgeous backdrop donated by Renai Hospital set off the artwork. Works by over 100 very generous and talented artists were donated to the cause.  It was obvious that the artists poured their hearts and souls into the pieces. They were displayed and sold with 100% of the sale prices going towards heart surgeries. In addition, the Heart to Heart knitting and sewing teams sold special edition heart bears, bags, quilts and other items.  They were beautiful enough to be works of art.

In addition to the art, there were also food and drinks sponsored by Riverdale Wines, Kasteel and Epermarket.  And, of course, there was a crowd pleasing raffle with prizes sponsored by:

  • Abbey Road, Aboro Academy, Alysia Lee – Creative Consulting, Ayi Matchmakers, Bargain Basement, BNC, Body & Soul, Bushido, Business Performance Consulting by Rita Malvone, Cages, Cuivre, Delta Health, DULi, DVA Spa, Epermarket, Floorball Centre Pro,  Fly & Sophia Dance Studio, Gap, Greenwave, Hai Seas Distillery, Homeslice, Intercontinental Shanghai Ruijin, Intercontinental Hotel Group (including Crown Plaza Shanghai Anting, Crown Plaza Shanghai Fudan, Crown Plaza Shanghai Hongqiao, Crown Plaza Shanghai Jinshan, Crown Plaza Shanghai Noah Square, Crown Plaza Xiayang Lake, Holiday Inn Shanghai Hongqiao, Holiday Inn Shanghai Huaxia, Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong Kangqiao, Hualuxe Shanghai Changfeng Park, Voco Shanghai Hongqiao CBD Suites), Jeans Massage, Lilli’s Shanghai, Pain Chaud, Pinyin Press, The Rooster, SEIMC,  Shanghai Events Calendar and Z Wang T-shirts.

The winners of the 15 gift baskets made up of multiple prizes were definitely lucky!
And we’d like to say a big thanks to SAE for storing and transporting all of our easels. It’s not a small task. And, of course, we really want to thank the 2025 Art for Hearts committee and the 80 volunteers who worked at the event. It wouldn’t have been possible without all of them.
The art show was spectacular. Between the sale of the art, raffle tickets, donations, H2H bags, heart bears, etc., we will be able to sponsor at least 7 more children for heart surgery.  CONGRATULATIONS to all of us — but especially the kids whose lives will be changed as a result of the event! Thank you.
Stay tuned for the 8th Annual Art for Hearts which is tentatively scheduled for November 2026.

Assembly at Yida Hospital
Three and a half years ago we moved our office and storage room to Yida Hospital in Qingpu district, since it was the new location where almost 100% of our surgeries were done.  Figuring out how to get volunteers to come out to the new location to volunteer was a daunting task.  “It’s too far!!!”  We’ve heard it a million times now.  And people still seem to believe it even though it is closer than our Xuhui district location for many volunteers.  At first only Silvia and I were out there doing the assembly tasks.  (She has since moved to Paris so we don’t have a volunteering picture other than the one by the Bund.) But very slowly, people have been joining the Yida Hospital “A” Team.

Why volunteer on the “A” Team?  Well, we have a pretty much unlimited amount of things to do!  We need you. We are fun and friendly.  Make new like-minded friends. You get to take part in crazy sales outside the warehouse.  You get to do help with sponsor visits to the wards.  You get to pack bags for the kids….. and sometimes you get to go deliver the bags and meet the sponsored children.  They are, after all, what Heart to Heart is all about.

So, don’t be shy.  Far???  Nothing is too far to do things for our sponsored children.  After all, they come much farther to have their surgeries.  Give the “A” Team a try.  A volunteering schedule is posted in this newsletter (or can be sent to you if you can’t find it.  Just ask at infoh2h@rendefoundation.org).  Note:  in addition to the meeting times that are open to all volunteers, once you’re on the volunteering list, you can come out most any day;  weekly schedules are posted and they are very flexible!

Come volunteer for the kids!

Featured Volunteer – Xiao Wang

Hello everyone~ I am from Hubei and currently work at Yida Hospital in the nationwide support program for children with congenital heart disease (as the H2H liaison). Through this work, I have had the privilege of meeting Karen and the ‘Heart to Heart’ volunteers.  I have witnessed countless acts of kindness from the volunteers who dedicate themselves to helping children with heart disease. Every act of selfless kindness deeply moves me and I feel honored to be a part of this chain of generosity.

In my spare time, I also take part in H2H activities – small acts of warmth – such as preparing gift bags to visit children in the wards, organizing donations from charitable enterprises, and participating in charity sales. All proceeds from these sales go towards funding treatment for children with congenital heart disease. Watching the children get better day by day brings an indescribable sense of fulfillment.

At Heart to Heart I have also met kind-hearted partners like Karen and Allan from different countries. Although we come from different backgrounds, kindness knows no boundaries, and the flow of love never stops. I hope that in the future we can continue to work hand in hand to help more children regain a ‘heartful’ life and embrace a healthy and happy tomorrow.
