Blooming Kindness

Blooming Kindness: A Special Floral Workshop with Poi (a H2H volunteer)

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made our floral workshop a success.
On April 22nd, a floral workshop took place at Abbey Road, hosted by long-term volunteer Poi. With expertise, patience, and a generous spirit, Poi taught community members how to arrange fresh spring blooms into beautiful floral creations.

Poi is a long-term volunteer and a dedicated member of our assembly team. She helps sort donations and supports the sales team. When she was helping pack some ceramic vases that were donated to Heart to Heart, an idea came to her: “Why don’t I use my strength to help Heart to Heart with these?”  She proposed hosting a floral workshop using the vases to create arrangements. The idea received enthusiastic support from the team.  Anita helped spread the word,  May designed the poster and Rebecca provided the Abbey Road venue at a minimal cost.  Poi set aside suitable vases and designed a seasonal arrangement featuring energetic colors like yellow and purple, along with seasonal flowers such as iris, orchid, larkspur, scabiosa, and more. She hosted a 12-person workshop with 50 RMB from each sign-up going directly to Heart to Heart.

“It was a fun afternoon learning techniques to build a beautiful flower arrangement. Everyone used the same flowers, yet each arrangement was unique and beautifully crafted.”   — Brenda, workshop attendee (and H2H volunteer on the Yida “A” Team)

“During the workshop, Poi guided us step by step, breaking down what could have been a
challenging craft into something quite effortless and allowing us to use our own creativity. Also,
it’s a wonderful opportunity to generate some funds for Heart to Heart”   — Anita, workshop attendee (and H2H volunteer on the Yoda assembly team)

“I’m thrilled to see how people created their own floral art pieces while helping more children
with my expertise and strength. I’m happy to make this a regular event.”   — Poi

This was already our second floral workshop.  The first was hosted last November with all profits fully supporting children’s surgeries.  The child supported by the April 22 workshop was an 8 month old boy from Guizhou province – Xiao Yao.  His picture is attached.

What’s Next?
Inspired by this workshop, we plan to host a floral workshop every two months. If you’d like to let your kindness bloom as well, please scan the QR code to join us.

Group Volunteering Festo Style

Receiving the help of volunteer groups from companies has been a long tradition at our Xuhui district branch (Yoda Hospital) of Heart to Heart.  But recently we haven’t had as many working opportunities there since our needs for help have shifted to our location at the new Yida hospital.  We were pleased to welcome, however, a small, but highly motivated group of Festo EHS volunteers to the Yoda assembly room on the afternoon of April 23 to help process our newly arrived batch of 1,008 small bears.  The small heart bears – we call them baby bears – are hot sellers at markets and events.  They are very cute and come as bears just with a red heart or with a cute little outfit made by our volunteers.  Baby bears require quite a bit of preparation work before they are ready to go out to find new homes: factory labels and sewed-on ribbons need to be cut off from each little bear, little red hearts are sewn on the bear or the bear gets a little outfit with a heart, red ribbons are put around their tiny necks and finally they are placed into a little red bag together with a name card of a H2H child who has received surgery before.

The tasks were perfect for our volunteer guests. With lots of fun and enthusiasm, they set a clear goal: “We are going to finish the entire batch!” And they did—at an incredible pace. I was kept busy bringing new bears to the table and providing baskets for the finished ones. In just three hours, all 1,008 baby bears had their factory labels and ribbons removed and were ready for the next steps. “That’s our Festo style!” I learned from Qin, who also spoke German and had lived in Germany. Although everyone worked with great focus and efficiency, we still made time to talk and get to know one another—group volunteering at its best.  And the girls were not tired, the last half hour they enjoyed dressing and finishing the first 20 baby bears with small dresses, red ribbons, name cards and bags – ready for the next market.  That afternoon session was a lot of fun for all of us and a big help for our work at Heart to Heart. Thank you very much, dear volunteers from Festo!
Juliana Zeiske, Yoda assembly manager

—— Juliana Zeiske

Letter from H2H Sponsored Child #405

Hello,

I am Lucky, the child patient from Yueyang who received aid at Shanghai Yuanda Cardiothoracic Hospital back in 2012. I underwent major surgery for complex congenital heart disease when I was four and a half years old; the procedure was made possible entirely through the funding provided by the “Heart to Heart” Special Fund. I still vividly remember how foreign volunteers made special trips to the hospital ward to visit me.

So many years have passed and I have grown up well with a stable state of health. Now that I have connected with you on WeChat, I wanted to express my sincere gratitude. Without your assistance back then, my family would never have been able to afford the surgery; you truly changed my life. Moving forward, I will continue to follow Heart to Heart’s charitable initiatives and do my small part to pay this kindness forward. Thank you once again for your years of steadfast benevolence!

Children’s Day

Children’s Day on June 1 is a much anticipated day for Chinese children.  Just because children are in the hospital for heart surgery doesn’t mean they are any less excited about it. In fact, maybe they are even more excited.  They will not only get something special from their parents, but they will also get gifts from the hospital and Heart to Heart.  For days before the event, they reminded me it was coming…. just in case I lost my mind and forgot about it/them.  As if I could!

Normally, the children take naps after lunch and don’t wake up until 2 or 3.  This year, however, most were too excited to sleep.  They had been told they could come to the playroom at 1:30 and so the normally sleeping kids started showing up right at 1:45.  They were greeted by us and employees from Heart to Heart’s wonderful sponsor – Morgan Stanley.  (Morgan Stanley donated 50 gift bags so we would be sure to have enough!  We had enough to hand them out to the children too weak to come down for the festivities and those in ICU as well as the children who participated.)  As soon as the children started showing up, Morgan Stanley employees began handing the bags out.  The kids really enjoyed the bags and also the time in the playroom they were able to enjoy on this special day.  Smiles were everywhere – on the children’s faces as well as the adults.  It was a day most of them won’t forget for a long time!

Children Visiting Children

Heart to Heart receives many requests each week from parents who want to show their children the value of charity towards others.  It’s a great thing they want to do, but if we allowed everyone who wanted to bring their children to the hospital to visit, we would have a constant stream of visitors.  It would be difficult to maintain respect for the recovering children’s privacy;  the visits to the ward really excite most of the children. Thus, visits to the children who have undergone heart surgery are restricted to the sponsor(s) who paid or helped pay for their surgery.  Therefore, if you have helped one of the children have heart surgery through a monetary donation, a visit (up to 5 people) is allowed/encouraged so you (and your children) can meet the child you sponsored.  It’s a great way to show your children how kindness can change someone’s life.

A wonderful example of this happened recently when Chris sponsored a heart surgery with his son Chace.  Luckily, the boy (Buyinyideli) they sponsored was almost the same age as Chace.  Chris and Chace brought him some paper airplane papers.  Little Buyinyideli  was slightly discouraged at first since he said he didn’t know how to make paper airplanes.  Chris and Chace quickly rectified that situation by showing him how to do it.  They made quite a few airplanes and Buyinyideli was definitely interested.  He was soon making them like an expert.  Then they were able to go into the hall to test out the airplanes. A great time was had by all!  We really appreciate that Chris and Chace sponsored Buyinyideli for heart surgery and then took the time to visit him in the hospital and show him the joys of self-made airplanes.  I know neither he nor his mother will ever forget the surgery they provided him with and it will be a long, long time before the fun visit is forgotten.

Visiting Your Sponsored Child

Everyone who donates towards a child’s heart surgery receives an invitation to visit that child while he/she is in the hospital.  The visits make a huge impression on the children and their families.  They are able to remember who helped them…. and it means a lot to them.  I’ve been in their homes and sometimes seen huge pictures of sponsors when the house had little else in the way of decorations.  They remember your generosity and how it completely changed their lives!  The visits are also – at least for me – incredibly moving experiences when you visit children whose lives you affected so deeply.

So come to the hospital to visit when you get the message that your child has completed surgery and is ready for visitors.  You won’t regret it.

Boy Scout Project for H2H

Many of our sponsored children and their families live in cold remote areas.  When they return home, they are always happy to have a new blanket to take back with them.  (Since the rooms are air-conditioned in the hospital, they also tend to keep their rooms pretty cold and can use blankets there.)  We are always trying to get people to donate single bed sized blankets since we know how well they are received by the families.  Thus, when Quartus asked if he and his fellow Eagle Scouts could do an Eagle Scout project focused on making blankets for us, we naturally said yes.  The approval, material purchasing, cutting, sewing, etc. took around 5 months.  The scouts did an amazing job though.  They donated 20 beautifully made blankets which are now being given out to our children who live in particularly cold areas of China.  Their parents are particularly pleased and I know the kids will be as well once winter sets in!

THANK YOU Quartus and the other Eagle Scouts who came up with and fulfilled this wonderful project!!!

WISS Interact Club Student-Led Cafe

At the start of the new semester, we noticed our school café’s operating hours had been reduced to just 15 minutes during breaks with a limited and monotonous selection of commodities. This was extremely different from the café we remembered and we found it quite hard to adjust. By chance, we heard a teacher suggest the idea of establishing a student-run secondary café. The concept immediately attracted us. We believe such a student-led café would not only help us develop leadership skills, but also provide students on campus with more delicious and affordable food options.

“Baking has never been merely a hobby—it’s my way of exploring beauty and creativity. I’m fascinated by the magical “chemical reactions” of ingredients, watching flour, sugar, and butter transform into something new and delicious. I enjoy this creative process filled with surprise and anticipation.” — Maggie

So far, we have done multiple sales throughout the school year, including Wisstival, International Day, and multiple sales during snack time. We have been collecting the profit and developed self-management skills and upheld the responsibility in taking the minimum amount from the profit to buy ingredients. We have undergone many challenges, such as gathering the starting amount, finding time to maintain the continuity of the project and many more. In spite of all these, by the end of every sale we had a sense of fulfilment from hearing the positive responses from our customers.

“I wanted to participate in a long-term duration project in service as action. This year I wanted to participate in a project where I can improve on my communication skills. From what I reflected on the previous school year this was a skill that I was lacking, and I wanted to improve on it this year.” — Anagha

On the 14th of May 2026, we donated the money we have earned in the past sales to Heart to Heart, donating a total of 2400 RMB. As Interactors we are truly grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause, and we owe this small achievement of ours to the support of those who helped us and the customers who wanted to take action. While the amount is small, we hope it can bring a little warmth to those in need. This is our first donation, and our journey has only begun. We hope to keep learning, improving, and finding more ways to give back to our WISS community that has supported us so warmly along the way by selling more treats which bring pleasure to the pallet and lighten up people’s day. We sincerely hope they can plant a seed of kindness that continues to grow. With humility and gratitude, we look forward to walking this path further and continue to support the marvelous Heart to Heart organization.

(Maggie)

(Anagha)

My name is Di Qianqian.  I’m in the 10th grade at a boarding high school in the U.S. This year I made a stop-motion short film called “Heart to Heart” focusing on helping children with congenital heart disease. It won the Gold Award at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in Massachusetts.  I also received the American Vision Award. None of this would have been possible without nearly five years of growth with Heart to Heart.

My connection with Heart to Heart started back in junior high in China. Our band, Firefly, had its first performance at a Heart to Heart heart bear sale.  We cheered on the little bears with our simple instruments and songs! Later on, whether it was Firefly’s charity concerts or visiting children with congenital heart disease at Delta Hospital with my bandmates, everything Heart to Heart did for the kids left a deep impression on me.

So, last summer when I started my art projects, the kids struggling with heart disease and the heart bears immediately popped into my mind. I created a script for a heartwarming rescue story featuring little bears and sick children,  It hand-painted storyboards and wool-felt puppets as the main parts of the animation video. With guidance from my studio teacher, I finally completed this stop-motion animation video.  The process of shooting stop-motion animation was really challenging—every tiny adjustment of the puppets and background in each frame required a lot of patience—but I really enjoyed it. Whether making the wool-felt puppets or setting up the animation shots, it felt incredibly healing!

I’m grateful to Heart to Heart for giving me a more real connection and reflection on life and for bringing continuous energy to my band with my friends and my art creation. I hope the stop-motion animation I created with ‘Heart to Heart’ as the theme can help more people understand Heart to Heart and help more children with heart disease who need support.

Shanghai American School – Puxi Campus

At the Eagle Shop in the Shanghai American School Puxi Campus volunteers personally dressed the school mascot ‘Eagle’ in beautiful sweaters and cute hats. In an instant, Eagle seemed to come to life becoming the ‘ambassador of love’ that every child wanted to take home.  The kids knew that taking Eagle home meant helping children with congenital heart disease regain their health. All these colorful sweaters and hats that Eagle wore were hand-knitted by volunteers, stitch by stitch, each filled with heartfelt care. From Santa Claus and the reindeer at Christmas to the joy and blessings of the New Year, volunteers designed themed outfits for different holidays—each piece was both delicate and warm. From November 2023 until now, this chain of love has raised over 60,000 RMB.  All was used for surgeries for children with heart disease.  Two children have successfully undergone surgery and are on the road to recovery, thanks to everyone’s support. For the volunteers, this is the best reward—the hours spent knitting day and night, the joy of dressing Eagle carefully and seeing Eagle happily taken home by the kids.  Stitch by stitch they are knitting not just the warmth of sweaters, but hope for children with congenital heart disease to get a new lease on life.

We salute every volunteer at Eagle Shop who works quietly behind the scenes!

And a special thanks to the Shanghai American School Puxi Campus for their loving support!

Heart Bears Spread Warmth

Five years ago Choco Qiaodou Media and Heart to Heart came together because of a shared intention—to help children with congenital heart disease become healthy.  So far, Qiaodou bought over 126 heart bears.  Their goodwill through the bears was passed on to their clients who had helped Qiaodou’s growth along the way.

“I didn’t expect this little bear to have such a story.”  “I’ll take it home and treasure it”.  When clients expressed these thoughts, love spread from Qiaodou to their clients.  Then it spreads to even more people when the stories are shared.  Kindness continuously multiplies and warmth endlessly circulates.’

Call for Artists – 2026  Art for Hearts/2026

Dear Artists,

We are thrilled to share exciting news—the 8th Art for Hearts art exhibition will take place in November 2026.  We hope you will all participate by submitting artwork. We need you to make it happen.

Art for Hearts is an annual event. Literally, 100% of proceeds from the 2026 Art for Hearts will fund heart surgeries for Chinese children with congenital heart disease whose families can’t afford the surgery. To date 72 children have received life-savings heart surgery as a result of the first 7 Art for Heart exhibitions. We want to sponsor many more heart surgeries with the 2026 Art for Hearts show!

Art for Hearts depends upon the talent, creativity and generosity of artists. YOU! All work is donated to the cause. Every art piece you create will become:

– A gift of warmth for children awaiting surgery

– A symbol of hope

– A means for children to have the heart surgery they need to survive

•一份送给等待手术儿童的温暖礼物;

•一种传递希望的象征;

This year we will place greater emphasis on the artistic quality of submissions. We welcome all mediums—from traditional ink to contemporary mixed media. Whether you’re a seasoned artist (professional or amateur) or an inspired emerging artist, your creativity will save children’s lives. We look forward to receiving your work.  So start creating now!

Help a Child Realize His/Her Dream

Ask most children what they want to be when they grow up and you’ll get a myriad of answers.  The same is true about the children who have heart surgery through Heart to Heart.  However, first, they want to be healthy.  They want to be strong.  They want to have time to realize their dreams.  And none of that can happen for them without heart surgery.   So, sponsor a child!  Help them become pianists, paleontologists, football stars, others, firemen, architects, truck drivers, comedians, artists, ship captains, super heroes, models, drummers, doctors, breakdancers, florists, boxers, vets, farmers, mountain climbers, princesses, mermaids or any number of other things our kids want to be.

Helping children with congenital heart disease is within your power.  Contact infoh2h@rendefoundation.org and find out how you can help them.
