An Unforgettable Visit: a Miracle Knitted with Love

On this April day, the sunshine is particularly warm. Three volunteers – Veronica, May, and Sophia – arrived at the hospital to visit little Dong Han, who had just undergone heart surgery. The moment we opened her room door, a smile blossomed on her pale face and her eyes sparkled as she looked at us. Her parents stood by the bed, filled with relief that their child could finally grow up healthy like ordinary children.

We had brought carefully prepared gifts: toys, new clothes, and storybooks. Some were donated by several volunteers from Renheng, along with heart-shaped pillows and small blankets personally knitted by Tingting. Dong Han buried her face in the fluffy pillow, nuzzled it, and wrapped herself in the blanket. She looked like a happy little bear. In that moment, sunlight poured through the curtains onto the colorful blanket, bathing the entire ward in a gentle warmth.

Dong Han, who is a five-year-old girl from Inner Mongolia, was diagnosed with congenital heart disease at birth, but her family could not afford the surgery. She is the 3,558th child sponsored for heart surgery by Heart to Heart. Part of the donation funds came from the sale of heart bears, whose outfits were designed and hand-knit or sewn by volunteers. It was this gathering of countless acts of kindness that provided her heart surgery on March 27.

Looking at Dong Han’s sweet smile, we are thankful that a miracle like this was caused by the warmth of ordinary people reaching out with a helping hand. Her laughter is like the tender sprouts breaking through the soil on the grassland and makes us more determined to continue on this path—because every time we help a child overcome congenital heart disease, we are rewriting the future of a family.

Walking for Love

Hello everyone! I am Veronica, a volunteer with Heart to Heart. My connection with Heart to Heart began ten years ago when I was working at a law firm and a partner’s wife was a Heart to Heart volunteer. This initiated a long-term collaboration between the law firm and Heart to Heart. My husband and I are deeply touched by this 100% volunteer-operated organization.

After retiring last year, I felt lost for a time. Joining the Heart to Heart knitting group and starting to learn knitting from scratch has provided me with immense satisfaction and a sense of purpose. It helped me escape from the emptiness I was experiencing and regain the meaning of life. The knitting gatherings every Tuesday have become the moments I look forward to the most. Now I can skillfully make clothes for heart bears and even teach at companies.

This year, my husband invited me to hike the Camino de Santiago in Spain. At first, I was resistant, until I thought of Karen’s annual fundraising hike—why not make this journey meaningful as well? So we decided to bring along a pair of little heart bears that I knitted by hand to raise funds along the way with a goal of 30,000 yuan (the cost of surgery for a child with congenital heart disease).

Surprisingly, during the arduous 115-kilometer trek over just 5 days (which included heavy rain, blazing sun, and even an a blackout), we and four friends not only achieved our goal but also raised 47,588 yuan! Some friends donated within five minutes, an old acquaintance who had been out of touch for years suddenly showed support, some people who had only met us once also supported us, and even a 9-year-old child contributed his New Year’s money… These gestures of warmth made us forget the hardships of the journey, the blisters on our feet, and the pain in our bodies. But not a single person left the trek. We gained so much love and emotion along the way – cheering and celebrating thanks to the support from friends, feeling as though an invisible hand was pushing us onward.

Now, the friends who donated have all received beautiful little bear gifts. This journey has made us feel profoundly that no matter how much we have been hurt or disappointed in life, this hike has truly purified our souls, allowing us to witness the warmth of humanity, filling our hearts with light. One teammate is still immersed in joy, saying, ‘Every day I go to sleep with a smile.’

Thanks to Heart to Heart not only has it healed the children’s hearts, but it has also healed the souls of us adults.

Bringing Joy into a Hospital Stay for Children Under 3
Whether you are 2 months old or 99 years old, staying in the hospital after major surgery just isn’t a fun thing to do.  The hours drag by.  Boredom and depression set in sometimes.  This state of mind definitely doesn’t help recovery.  It’s one of the reasons we have the Heart to Heart playroom.  Getting children out of bed and making them happy speeds the recovery process.  Since the playroom is only open 2 hours a day (so the children don’t get too tired), however, there are still many hours where our children need to find something to do. That’s where our welcome bags come in.  Every child sponsored by Heart to Heart gets one.  In addition to toiletries and clothing, the bags have art supplies, books, toys, etc. to occupy our little patients.  We try to keep them busy in their beds.

After years of dealing with donated toys, it seems to be a fact that we just don’t get much for children under 3 years old.  Oftentimes, we are at a loss as to what to give them to make them smile.  That’s where you can help.  This age children love musical instruments, things to keep their hands busy, balls, duplo, rattles, soft books, things that play music, etc.  If you’re looking for a way to help us, send things of this type!  We’d love to have them.

NEW toys can be sent to: Karen 13916295852

2nd hand toys in good shape can be sent to: 3FL   Juliana 18221187714

We’ll take care of getting the toys to the children who need them.  Thank you for helping!

SCIS ECE Charity Art Auction

On April 26, 2025, SCIS celebrated the 10th anniversary of its beloved ECE Charity Art Auction—an annual fundraiser that supports Heart to Heart Shanghai. Over the past years, this event has raised enough funds to sponsor life-saving surgeries for 35 children.

This year’s event, themed “A Colorful Life,” welcomed 90 guests to an evening filled with creativity, community, and compassion. The program was divided into three exciting segments: a live auction showcasing original artwork from each ECE class, Heart to Heart bear sales and a special piece by the Girl Scouts of Shanghai; a silent auction featuring generous donations from local businesses and school community members; and a lively raffle drawing.

The highlight of the night was the auction of “A Windy Day,” a stunning mixed-media piece by Ms. Julie Jackson’s Nursery class, created under the guidance of parent artist Mao Mao. This artwork captured the hearts of many and ultimately sold for an impressive RMB 6,100—the highest bid of the evening. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed.

The SCIS ECE Charity Art Auction continues to be a testament to the power of art, community spirit, and the shared commitment to making a difference in the lives of children in need. As the event grows year by year, so too does its impact—bringing hope, healing, and heart to families across China.

JUMAMI  for Heart to Heart

Back in late 2022, three “best aged girls” from Austria and Germany – Magdalena, Michaela and Juliana – started to meet regularly to enjoy their hobby of sewing together…and soon by JUMAMI was born, a logo related to our first names plus the infinity sign for unlimited creativity.

Magdalena has been an active sewing team member for H2H for years already, well known for her perfection and beautifully sewn heart bear outfits. She was the one who sparked the fire in me to learn how to use a sewing machine earlier that year during a H2H project with the German fashion company Gerry Weber and to join the team. Michaela brought in the idea of making bags – all kind of bags – to widen our “product range” beyond cute bear outfits.

We began sewing various bags, from simple pouches and foldable shopping bags to elegant ladies’ handbags. It has been a learning curve, with try outs, sometimes failure but mainly success, big improvement of our sewing skills and necessary upgrades of our technical equipment, and – most important – we always had a lot of fun together!

In a world of overproduction, fast fashion and single use items, our vision is to create sustainable things, using secondhand materials and giving them a new life. That’s what by JUMAMI stands for: all our bags are mainly made from recycled materials.

At H2H we often receive donations of old fabrics and clothes which can perfectly be re-used for our sewing projects.
And we established new channels via personal contacts like Mr. Wally Li, General Manager of Glen Raven Asia Suzhou, a company that produces fabrics for outdoor furniture and sunscreens, who sent us a big package of different heavy fabrics after we introduced our project to him.
Spreading the word about what we are doing and whom we support does often inspire and engage other friendly people to support us: The cooperation with C&A sourcing started as the simple request for outdated fabric samples and is now an established connection for H2H. Two or three times a year we receive many bags of sample clothes and fabric samples and cash donations from C&A.

In Guangzhou, during our “business trip” to visit the famous fabric and accessory markets last March, we were overwhelmed by the immediate action of a shop owner who called us back and gave us several meters of denim fabric right from the panel for free after we asked for samples and told him about H2H.

In spring 2024 we introduced our bags as additional merchandise items for H2H booths at various events, and they are well received. The bags now got a H2H label which clearly show their purpose of raising money for children’s heart surgery.

The money from our first sold H2H bag went to a combined donation to sponsor a nine-month-old little girl from Guizhou, Li Shuxuan, H2H Child #3337. We were so happy to see our work and passion going into the right direction!

Together with the H2H sewing and cutting team we widened our portfolio to make use of all the collected fabrics which are not suitable for bag making and started quilting to make blankets and napkins and more. Those new items were first time successfully offered to public sales at our 6th Art for Hearts Show last November.
by JUMAMI for H2H was presented with own space and could contribute over 10.000 RMB in sales to the total achievement of the event. The bags by JUMAMI have already become a true H2H project: engaged assembly team members like Celine, Sandra, Juliet, Camilla and Sophia started using a sewing machine (again) and learn to sew H2H bags and other items. Together we want to continue raising money for many more surgeries!

Smiles Across the Miles

Heart to Heart has a long tradition of helping the wider community and this month saw smiles stretching from the city of Shanghai all the way to rural Tibet.

With temperatures starting to climb in here in Shanghai, donations of warm winter clothes were quickly beginning to pile up. Luckily, one of our regular volunteers, Lorenzo, had the perfect solution and contacted a friend who works with families in Tibet. Yongbei was thrilled to learn of a potential source of clothing for the young children in his local area and arranged to come and meet the assembly team at Yuanda hospital, where his smiling face and generous nature quickly won over all our hearts.

On learning of the project, the regular Tuesday assembly volunteers immediately sprang into action and carefully packed suitable clothing into bags and boxes ready for the long journey ahead …we may even have slipped in a few soft toys as an extra treat!!!

We have just heard that the first shipment has reached the children, and the smiling faces below reveal their delight and enthusiasm upon opening the parcels. Here in Shanghai, the whole assembly team are also still smiling at the joy of being able to reach out to another community and perpetuate the Heart to Heart spirit of helping others.

Long may we continue sending warm-hearted smiles across the miles!

Featured Sponsored Child
The children whom Heart to Heart sponsors for heart surgery are diverse.  They come from all over China, represent every ethnic group and have all kinds of heart problems.  All the problems can have terrible consequences if they aren’t fixed, but some of their heart defects are “simple” and some are complex.  As long as the doctors think a situation is operable and the parents agree, Heart to Heart tries to help the child by paying for their heart surgery.  We want to help everyone who needs it.

One of our recent little patients with a complex situation was an 11 year old girl from Guizhou province – Huang Han.  She comes from a Dong minority family of four – parents, a 13 year old brother and herself.  They live in a self-built house in rural Guizhou province. Her brother is in junior high school. She is also in school when possible.  The mother stays home to take care of the family. The father is a migrant factory worker earning 40,000 yuan a year.  He sends as much of this home to the family as he can. They still have a debt of 50,000 yuan from Huang Han’s first surgery and couldn’t get loans for the other surgeries she needed.

Huang Han was diagnosed with complex congenital heart disease when she was four months old.  It was known that multiple surgeries were required to correct the situation. She had her first surgery in Guangzhou in 2020. She started suffering from fatigue and her lips turned purple so she had her 2nd open heart surgery through H2H at Yida Hospital in December 2024.  Her 3rd surgery open heart surgery also took place at Yida Hospital in February 2025 through Heart to Heart.  She was nervous throughout the process, but was a brave, upbeat little girl who had a smile for everyone.  She’s doing fine now and wants to thank all the Heart to Heart sponsors who helped her get the surgeries she needed.  The care and attention that so many people have shown her through the process has filled her with hope.  She’s looking forward to a long, happy life now.  We know she’ll do well with the wonderful attitude and loving personality that she showed all of us.  We will miss having her around, but know she’s destined for great things and that maybe we’ll see her another day under the best of circumstances.
Good luck Huang Han!

Featured Sponsor: Dulwich College Kindergarden School DUCKS

On Saturday 26th April, the children, families and staff of DUCKS, Dulwich College Kindergarten School, came together to raise money for children with congenital heart disease. Taking part in the DUCKS Dash, an obstacle course run on a route around the whole campus, our students aged 2 to 7 had fun together while raising money for our valued community partner, Rende Heart to Heart Shanghai.

Our DUCKS Dash is just the latest initiative undertaken over the many years we have partnered with Heart to Heart. It is a relationship we are very proud of and continue to develop year by year. Organiser and Assistant Head of DUCKS, Carol Dutch commented, ‘Our idea is by exercising and keeping our hearts healthy, we raise money for children who need surgery to fix their hearts. The support from our school community was outstanding, and the event was a highlight of the school year!’
Service learning is at the heart of our ethos here at Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong. Our college values underpin everything we do; Respect, Inclusivity, Kindness, Integrity, Resilience, and Responsibility. Furthermore, our value statements of ‘Value every voice, ‘Do the right thing’, and Make a difference’ really guide our young learners in helping them understand the importance of each of us playing our part.
Sharing the photos and stories of the children who receive their heart surgery as a direct result of our DUCKS sponsorship, brings our community together. There is something very beautiful, and powerful- about children helping children.

Thank you, Heart to Heart, for all you do and allowing us the privilege of joining you on your journey.

Heart to Heart Children at Home
A congenital heart defect (CHD) is a defect of the heart that is present at birth, meaning children are born with the problem rather than acquiring it later in life. There are many kinds of CHDs ranging from those that are very minor and may go undetected for many years to others that are very serious and require immediate intervention.  It is a birth defect that is global in scope.  It exists everywhere.  Heart to Heart Shanghai just happens to be in China so we focus on helping Chinese children who have the disease, but whose families can’t afford the surgery required to help their children.

Where in China do our children come from?  All over the place!  Here are some of them we’ve helped in the last 6 months.  They are all back home now recovering and starting their lives as children without CHD.  They and their families are full of hope and the possibilities that life has to offer.  Join our mission to help even more children!
