JUMAMI for Heart to Heart Back in late 2022, three “best aged girls” from Austria and Germany – Magdalena, Michaela and Juliana – started to meet regularly to enjoy their hobby of sewing together…and soon by JUMAMI was born, a logo related to our first names plus the infinity sign for unlimited creativity. Magdalena has been an active sewing team member for H2H for years already, well known for her perfection and beautifully sewn heart bear outfits. She was the one who sparked the fire in me to learn how to use a sewing machine earlier that year during a H2H project with the German fashion company Gerry Weber and to join the team. Michaela brought in the idea of making bags – all kind of bags – to widen our “product range” beyond cute bear outfits. We began sewing various bags, from simple pouches and foldable shopping bags to elegant ladies’ handbags. It has been a learning curve, with try outs, sometimes failure but mainly success, big improvement of our sewing skills and necessary upgrades of our technical equipment, and – most important – we always had a lot of fun together! In a world of overproduction, fast fashion and single use items, our vision is to create sustainable things, using secondhand materials and giving them a new life. That’s what by JUMAMI stands for: all our bags are mainly made from recycled materials. At H2H we often receive donations of old fabrics and clothes which can perfectly be re-used for our sewing projects. And we established new channels via personal contacts like Mr. Wally Li, General Manager of Glen Raven Asia Suzhou, a company that produces fabrics for outdoor furniture and sunscreens, who sent us a big package of different heavy fabrics after we introduced our project to him. Spreading the word about what we are doing and whom we support does often inspire and engage other friendly people to support us: The cooperation with C&A sourcing started as the simple request for outdated fabric samples and is now an established connection for H2H. Two or three times a year we receive many bags of sample clothes and fabric samples and cash donations from C&A. In Guangzhou, during our “business trip” to visit the famous fabric and accessory markets last March, we were overwhelmed by the immediate action of a shop owner who called us back and gave us several meters of denim fabric right from the panel for free after we asked for samples and told him about H2H. In spring 2024 we introduced our bags as additional merchandise items for H2H booths at various events, and they are well received. The bags now got a H2H label which clearly show their purpose of raising money for children’s heart surgery. The money from our first sold H2H bag went to a combined donation to sponsor a nine-month-old little girl from Guizhou, Li Shuxuan, H2H Child #3337. We were so happy to see our work and passion going into the right direction! Together with the H2H sewing and cutting team we widened our portfolio to make use of all the collected fabrics which are not suitable for bag making and started quilting to make blankets and napkins and more. Those new items were first time successfully offered to public sales at our 6th Art for Hearts Show last November. by JUMAMI for H2H was presented with own space and could contribute over 10.000 RMB in sales to the total achievement of the event. The bags by JUMAMI have already become a true H2H project: engaged assembly team members like Celine, Sandra, Juliet, Camilla and Sophia started using a sewing machine (again) and learn to sew H2H bags and other items. Together we want to continue raising money for many more surgeries!
