Yoga for H2H
Theresa does so many things for Heart to Heart.  She sews, comes to assembly, fills in when the events team needs help at bazaars, is on the on-line sales team, has parties where donations to H2H are made and runs the Clothing Auction Network with donations going to H2H.  She is truly an asset to H2H.  And now, she’s held her second yoga class to benefit Heart to Heart.  From all accounts it was a wonderful class – challenging but good.  Everyone enjoyed it.  It was definitely successful from a donation standpoint as well;  it raised RMB 1,800 towards the sponsorship of another child for heart surgery.  We love you, Theresa!

Rooster’s 8th Annual Scooter Wash for H2H

Every year H2H looks forward to The Rooster’s Scooter Wash.  This year was no exception.  This year The Rooster added a slightly different twist, which seems to have worked well.  Chase combined the event with the Ignite Wellness Mini-fest at the Mute Garage on Yanping Road with Vedett as the beer sponsor.  So, you could either get a beer and your scooter, bicycle, self, whatever washed for RMB 100 or you could just get a beer for RMB 25.  All the proceeds went to Heart to Heart.  There were lots of scooters, motorcycles and other vehicles to wash with a crew of fitness trainers as the washers.  It was quite the display of soap, water, fit bodies and fun.  RMB 4,293 was donated from the event – that’s a lot of scooters and beer.  Thank you, Chase, for all your work for Heart to Heart!

More Support from Brits Abroad

Brits Abroad has been a Heart to Heart supporter since 2004.  It’s only one of the many reasons why we love them.  They’ve sponsored many children and some rural school libraries as well.  It was a pleasure to attend their recent Charity Coffee Morning where they were giving 7 charities an opportunity to introduce themselves to members who were in attendance.  It was a fun morning.  There were many H2H volunteers who are Brits Abroad members in attendance so it was very friendly.  And, it was amazing how many of the charity representatives we knew as well.  It was definitely a nice reunion and a great place to meet the newcomers.  Best of all, Brits Abroad surprised all of the attending charities by giving us each RMB 10,000 for our programs.  Fantastic!  Now we are 1/3 of the way closer to supporting another child for heart surgery.  We hope we’re associated with the generous people at Brits Abroad for many, many years to come.

Pamper Yourself at the Sanctuary

If you missed having a facial or massage in September at The Sanctuary, you really don’t want to miss the October promotion.  Both the massage and the facial are amazing!  On top of getting fantastic treatment, The Sanctuary is giving H2H volunteers, sponsors and friends a 30% discount in October …. then 15% of that will be donated to Heart to Heart to help with a heart surgery.  It’s a great offer.  If you’re a fan of The Sanctuary you’ll know just how good it is!  If you’ve never tried it, you should.  You won’t regret it.  While giving great massages and facials, The Sanctuary resolves common skincare concerns for women, men & teenagers.   It is your go-to place for clean, healthy, glowing skin.  See details on the flyer for how you can participate.

You are invited to the 2021 Art for Hearts
We are happy to announce that the 2021 Art for Hearts art show will be held October 22–23 at the Shanghai Centre 4th floor atrium (1376 Nanjing West Road, Jing’an District).  Since 2018, Art for Hearts has been a well-received H2H fundraising event.  Good-hearted artists from overseas and all parts of China have been supporting us with their artistic talents. The funds we raised from the first 3 Art for Hearts shows sponsored 33 children for heart surgery.

This year, we are lucky that Shanghai Centre will once again provide us with their amazing atrium venue. We are also grateful to have many sponsors to help hold this year-end party including St. James’s Place Wealth Management who has been sponsoring Art for Hearts since 2018.

The launch of the 2021 Art for Hearts will be on Friday night (October 22 from 7-10). Guests may enjoy wine, beer, soft drinks and food provided by H2H sponsors while shopping for artwork donated by many artists. On October 23 we will continue the exhibition and sale (from 10-6) for those who can’t make it on Friday night. No admission fee will be charged on either day.

We are still accepting artwork donations and event sponsorships. We hope more community members can sponsor us for raffle prizes. Both deadlines are October 12. For more information, please contact April Shi (WeChat ID: aprilyuchenshi).

April Shi (WeChat ID:  aprilyuchenshi)

The German Club Helps Our Sewing Team Each YearNormally, the Heart to Heart sewing team uses donated clothing and material that is cut up and used to make the amazing outfits they produce.  This works really well most of the year.  Occasionally, however, there are seasons requiring special fabrics, colors, etc. that we don’t get enough material donated and the team needs help.  For the last several years the German Club has come to the rescue.  They have donated funds so that the sewing team can purchase specialty material for Christmas, Chinese New Year, etc. outfits.  This has enabled them to make some beautiful outfits that have sold extremely well at holidays and special events.  It’s a great way to help sponsor children for heart surgery and we are truly appreciative of the German Club’s assistance.  It was wonderful to have just received a donation for this year and to have some of the German Club members join one of the sewing sessions.  Thank you German Club!

Other Interesting stats

Intl. playing field (15+ nationalities)

Stepping out of our comfort zone
Golf has always been a great marketing tool favored by businesses.  If used properly, it can also do wonders for charities. In the past two decades, however, H2H has never attempted to organize a golf tournament.  As of the2021 September 8, that is HISTORY!   We aim to turn this event into a regular annual golf fundraiser.  We encourage players and sponsors to move fast to lock in your places for the second H2H Charity Golf.  It will be #STRONGER #BETTER # FASTER

Warmest Appreciation & Recognition
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the staff from YinTao for their hospitality and SUPER RATES; the owners showed tremendous respect for the H2H cause. Also, we owe a lot to our team of dedicated volunteers.  We will hopefully see the players again next year.  Thank you for turning out for H2H!  Last, but not least, we’d like to say that we really appreciate our generous sponsors who showered us with gifts and wonderful resources. (List of sponsors: refer to the official poster)

Early Invitations
We have recently formed an executive committee to ensure smooth operations for future golf related fundraiser events.  Please contact us if you are keen to share your skills and resources towards this charitable cause. We are hoping to get our sponsors onboard the concept of “Business for Good” and Golf for Hearts campaign.  Do reach out to us if you see an opportunity for us to build strategic partnerships.

See you next year!

Make sure you find time to swing by the Art for Hearts event at the Shanghai Centre on October 22.

Featured Sponsor of the Month – YCIS

YCIS Shanghai has worked with Heart to Heart since 2009 and, together, we have impacted the lives of almost 100 children and their families. Heart to Heart is a charity that we hold close to our community. Our parents and teachers have raised funds through initiatives such as a second-hand uniform shop, galas, and brunches. Our students initiated a partnership with H2H to knit sweaters and dresses for the heart bears that get adopted by our donors. COVID19 restrictions limited initiatives more recently, but we keep our hearts open and continue to be creative in other ways to give back to the community.

At YCIS Shanghai, one of our aims is to nurture globally competent and compassionate leaders with a servant’s heart. YCIS students learn this through service learning, teaching them compassion and charitable service. This way of thinking allows students to be present in the world around them and actively make positive changes in class, at home, in the community, and beyond.

As we approach the 90th anniversary of our founding in Hong Kong, and almost 30 years in Shanghai, it is a great time to reflect on the core values of our school and the many ways in which students and the community come together to give back and make a difference to the world around them. This happens across all year levels at the school, and below are just a few examples.

Students in ECE, as young as K2, will be introduced to Service-Learning concepts through art projects using recycled materials or positive food habits and avoiding food waste. In Primary, Year 1 and Year 4 students collaborate to build lamps and learn how the gift of light impacts other students’ learning in less fortunate areas globally. Our Secondary students use an entrepreneurial mindset to see how they can make more of an impact. They have created sustainable business plans and raise awareness for their peers and younger learners.

YCIS CEO & School Supervisor Dr Betty Chan Po-king detailed the benefits of this approach within our curriculum: “Interlinked with YCIS’ commitment to global education is the vision to promote the inner moral compass. This balance will enable tomorrow’s generation to take the helm and steer their way through human complexities, enabling them to exhibit goodness, honesty and compassion with confidence. Our responsibility today will lead to a more stable world in the future. After all, it is the learning that will impact and transform the future.”

We look forward to our continued partnership with Heart to Heart and the meaningful initiatives that come as a result.

Featured Children of the Month – Pan Longtang and Pan Longxuan
When Pan Longxuan (who is now 2 years old) was one month old, he was taken to the county hospital for treatment of a cold. The doctor suspected he may have congenital heart disease so referred him to the provincial hospital for a detailed cardiac examination.  Sure, enough Pan Longxuan had CHD-PDA.  Surgery would be needed in the future.  At this point the family entered the waking nightmare that comes to most of our sponsored families – learning that your child requires heart surgery to live normally and knowing that you have no way to pay for the surgery.  Things were critical enough for them, but then their second son was born ….. and because Pan Longxuan had CHD, his parents took Pan Longtang to the county hospital soon after his birth to check his heart.  Their worst fears were realized – Pan Longtang (who is now 6 months old) had congenital heart disease as well – both ASD and PDA.  Both children needed surgery, but the parents couldn’t afford one surgery much less two.

There are 7 people in this Miao Minority family – grandparents, parents, uncle (27 years old), and the 2 boys.  The grandmother and mother look after the two children. The grandfather is in poor health and can only work occasionally. He doesn’t make much. The uncle is a migrant worker who sends a little money home each year. The father works odd jobs near the home since both of the boys have health problems. Altogether, the family makes around RMB 36,000 a year. They were not able to borrow money to pay for either much less both surgeries.

Luckily, they were referred to Heart to Heart.  We were able to match them up with a large donation from Texas Instruments so that both surgeries could be financed.  Pan Longtang had his open heart surgery first.  As soon as he was stable and in the Recovery Unit, Pan Longxuan had his surgery.  Both boys are out of danger now and should be released to the general ward soon.   Although the parents still have to be in shock and not yet thinking clearly, they have to be feeling the relief that can only come after your children have survived a crisis and it seems that everything will be okay.  Thanks to the generosity of Texas Instruments both of the boys should recover fully and go on to live the lives that their parents originally dreamed for them – as healthy, normal boys.

Featured  Volunteer of the Month – Lexi
Hi everyone,  Thanks for your attention and care for kids seeking help through Heart to Heart. My name is Lexi.  I’m a local here in Shanghai. It’s really great pleasure to be the featured volunteer of the month for Heart to Heart. I have been working as an event volunteer at Heart to Heart since 2019.  I came across Heart to Heart on the Wechat Official Account two years ago and didn’t expect that I would come this far along with Heart to Heart or to be honored the as the featured volunteer.  : ).

Before working as event volunteer at Heart to Heart, I devoted myself to volunteer work with different NGOs since university. I have visited elders in rest homes, played with kids in hospitals, collected and classified rubbish on beaches, volunteered at trekking events for fund raising, been a first-aid volunteer for the Shanghai International Marathon since I had a WAFA (Wilderness Advanced First Aid) Certificate that time, and so on.

Then for last two years, I have worked as an event volunteer at Heart to Heart. It’s always lucky and cheerful that one can do something good for people who need help.  It’s even more amazing when I realized that I hit the sweet spot when I was selling heart bears as an event volunteer which perfectly matched my strengths with my devotions. I really enjoy demonstrating how we help kids in need and promoting all the cute bears made by the sewing and knitting team members.  Meanwhile, I have also come to know some new volunteer friends from different backgrounds that came here for the same vision – to help kids. It is always good to work as an event volunteer to tell people about all the great work that Heart to Heart does.  This volunteer work means everything especially when I get a chance to play with the kids in hospital when I pick up or deliver the events materials back to the playroom.

We do hope the H2H kids get a chance to see this world outside the hospital. Thanks again for attention here and millions of thanks for everything that Heart to Heart does

Farewell to 陈家扣/Chen Jiakou

It is with great sadness that we impart the news that Chen Jiakou has passed away.  Chen Jiakou was one of the founding members of the Hongqiao H2H knitting group which has been knitting heart bear outfits (especially Christmas outfits) since 2012.  She knitted hundreds of lovely outfits for Heart to Heart and was an integral part of the group up until the end.  She will be sorely missed for her fun personality as well as her love of and dedication to Heart to Heart.  She was just 72.  We wish she could have stayed with all of us longer.  (She is pictured with the pink hearts on her arm.)
