Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

What did you do during the Shanghai lockdown?  One of our sponsors, Brits Abroad, ran a series of little games/competitions to keep everyone entertained.  One of the competitions was to complete the drawing as per the instructions using only your phone’s photo editing function.  There were lots of innovative entries, but the winner was our own Michele Davis.  What did she do with her RMB 100 prize?  Donated it to Heart to Heart, of course.  Thank you Michele for all the work you do on the assembly team and the Art for Hearts Committee!  You’re a great volunteer and generous person.  The RMB 100 will definitely go to help a child get heart surgery.  Every little bit helps!

Our Current Situation

Hi Heart to Heart supporters.  We truly hope that you are all doing well and got through April without catching COVID or having too much stress.  Naturally, we are looking forward to continuing more heart surgeries in May and beyond since there are many children waiting to come in for it.   We want them to get the help they need!  We also want all of you to be able to start volunteering again;  we’ll keep you updated about which groups are starting back and when.  Don’t forget us!

One change that we should mention is that the May Epermarket promotion of heart bears and their 5% company donation will need to be delayed.  Epermarket is concentrating on getting everyone the food/supplies they need at the moment so we should let them do what they do so well.  They will start the other promotions in a month to come.  We’ll let you know when that is so we can maximize the benefit.  We are truly grateful to them for their support and know it will happen as soon as things are back to normal.

Thank you for supporting Heart to Heart!

Good-bye from Jutta Scheidner

The first time I came to an assembly at H2H I was overwhelmed and wondering if I will ever know how assembly “works”.

Everyone else seemed to instantly know what to do and what went where.  I found a corner and was folding IKEA bags and observing the busy people in the room.  After folding a lot of IKEA bags, my hands were a bit sore that day, but I was already looking forward to being back at assembly the next week as I liked the atmosphere and how everyone was enjoying their time contributing to the assembly.

Week after week I was more comfortable helping with other tasks during assembly.  Over time I also got involved in cutting and sewing of bear outfits. I even learned sewing on a sewing machine, something I had never done before.  I also helped at the 2021 Art for Hearts show and was also involved in other tasks besides assembly.

One of the best days I had with H2H was when a group of Tibetan children and their guardians came to Shanghai for their heart surgery and I was part of the “welcome ceremony”.  It was fascinating to see that H2H was sponsoring the surgery of so many children.  Seeing these children made all the “work” worth our while and I was even more thankful to be part of such an important organization. Unfortunately, after only 1 1/2 years my husband and I have now left Shanghai and moved to Singapore.  I will miss everyone at H2H. But I will stay connected and I will always cherish being part of such a wonderful and much needed cause.

Kids Helping Kids During the Lockdown

What did Freya Kewell (age 10), Lucy Kewell (age 7) and their friend Emily Webster (age 10) do once they could go out into their neighborhood?  In the words of Freya:  “We had a sale of our toys and books in our compound. We wanted to give the money to Heart to Heart because some families who have children who need heart operations don’t have enough money to pay themselves. The sale was fun because it gave us something to do in lockdown and we raised 820 RMB.”

Heart to Heart really appreciates your work for children who need heart surgery!  Thank you for making this extra effort.

Relax on Monday Evenings

If you’re feeling a little stressed out, Giorgio has a solution for you.  Every Monday evening at 20:00, he will be conducting a 40-minute session of relaxing music with Tibetan singing bowls.  The sessions will normally be in Chinese, but if you don’t speak Chinese and sign up, he will make them bilingual.  If there is enough interest, he will create a separate English class.  Just scan the code to get started on your relaxing experience.

Message from Bev Darle

I am currently on holiday in Mallorca in Spain with my parents.  They are 87 and 86. It sounds lovely, I know, but we all have Covid so we have been confined to the house now for a week. Fortunately, nobody is very ill, but we are fast running out of food in the fridge and, perhaps more importantly, wine to drink in order to keep our spirits up. I’ve spent quite a bit of time this afternoon trying to figure out how the local supermarket delivery service works!

Otherwise, try to enjoy your lockdown.  Organize some on-line games with friends and colleagues.  Stay in touch with people and don’t get discouraged.  You’ll be back volunteering with Heart to Heart before you know it

I’ve been following the lockdowns in Shanghai on the news here. It looks very organised and strict.  I hope you are all faring well and dealing with life at home. It’s very stressful I know and you are all in our thoughts.

I have read several books this week, done quite a lot of cooking, watched some Netflix and crocheted some dresses for Heart to Heart bears. I have been making dresses for a long time.  It’s an easy way to help my friends back in Shanghai. After we left in 2018, my husband used to return regularly for work and take with him bags of H2H bear dresses that his colleagues would get delivered to Karen and DJ at Yoda for him. Thierry hasn’t been to China for more than 2 years now.  Indeed he hasn’t been anywhere in 2 years because of travel bans at his company and my little pile of dresses is fast becoming too big for his suitcase! Let’s hope he can make it back before he retires next year!

How much has changed; I am group volunteering manager for Heart to Heart and love organising sessions at the hospital when our friends from all around Shanghai can come and help us out with whatever task we have in hand. That’s all been postponed for the moment but maybe, whilst you are all at home, you will have some time to see if you have any new or gently used children’s or adult clothes that you could send to Heart to Heart; ask your children to look through their toy boxes for games they don’t play with any more.  They will all be very well received by our sponsored children and families.  Put them to one side and we will let you know as soon as we can accept deliveries again.

Take care everyone and stay positive!

Featured Children this Month

March and April were intense months as Shanghai tried to stop the spread of COVID within the city.  The months were definitely nail-biting for many of us, but imagine how it must have been for the children who were approved for heart surgeries through Heart to Heart during the period.  Heart surgery, travel, a strange huge city, lockdowns, etc. faced the brave parents and their children who made the journey.  Although all of the approved children couldn’t get to Shanghai (and will hopefully come later), many of them did – even a set of siblings and a set of twins who all needed surgery.  They came and they stuck it out through the situation and are now getting ready to go home to their new lives.  Although none of us can visit them since the hospital is in lockdown, I know they would want to express to each and every one of you how much your volunteering and sponsoring Heart to Heart means to them and their futures.  It was a difficult decision and journey for them, but I know they are all glad that you helped them and that they went through with the surgery.

Featured  Volunteer of the Month – Lusia Lu

.“I wanna get more involved in charity work. Is there any organization you would recommend?” In May 2021 I was asking around. My good friend Jessie recommended Heart to Heart. She had just volunteered at a H2H event and said “it was meaningful and fun”. With curiosity, I went on H2H’s website where I found all the information I needed to know and signed up to be a volunteer.

Thereafter, my journey with H2H started. My first main role was as Karen’s, H2H’s Executive Director, assistant. Meanwhile, I volunteered at markets, selling heart bears and helped with translation and writing. 4 months later, I took over the management of the Events Team (because I have a background in Public Affairs & Communications) and it has been my primary responsibility ever since.  I have been enjoying this new challenge. It feels good to utilize my skills and resources to help a good cause. It’s also been a pleasure to work with a diverse group of people who are kind and caring – events volunteers are dedicated and resilient, who do their best to represent H2H at a variety of events, rain or shine as well as assembly, knitting and sewing teams who are supportive and talented and who always provide much needed help to ensure events can be executed smoothly.  Our many sponsors are generous and collaborative.  They give us the opportunities and platforms to help provide surgeries.

Is it smooth sailing all the time? Of course not, but what keeps me going is the fact that we are and always have been a 100% volunteer organization and we have a $0 operating budget so that 100% of donations are spent on surgeries. I’m deeply impressed and proud, even though it means sometimes, I have to apologize but say no to a sponsor if it happens no one is available to volunteer at their event; it also means sometimes volunteers have to transport the event kit back and forth on our own or we need to depend on sponsors for storage and transportation. Thanks to our many amazing events volunteers, some of whom have been with H2H for a long time and always ready and happy to help, we were able to survive an incredibly busy event season in 2021 and do quite well in the end! H2H helped 406 kids with congenital heart disease around China get the surgeries they needed but couldn’t afford in 2021. A big shout-out to our event volunteers! We definitely couldn’t have done that without you!

Now, unfortunately, we are taking a break from all the events due to COVID.  Normally in the beautiful spring, there are plenty of events for us to participate in. I myself am taking this time to rest, continue learning and support H2H in any way I can, such as writing newsletter articles, translating and spreading the word about the great work we do at H2H.

To all the existing volunteers on the events team, please take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Hope you’re staying safe and having everything under control. Look forward to seeing you at our future events!

To new friends who’re reading this and are interested in giving back with a loving organization by taking part in something fun, the events team always welcomes new volunteers 🙂 Go on our website (www.h2hsh.com) to learn more and sign up.
