Things We Need
Heart to Heart always needs money so we can perform more heart surgeries for our little patients who need it so badly. But, if you also want to help out by sending things that the children and their families need while they are in the hospital (or when they get home), here is what we currently need:
- Adult toothpaste
- Boys & girls clothing (ages 6 months – 4 years)
- Baby toys （ages 3 months – 3 years)
- “Throw” blankets that can be used for single beds
We really appreciate your generosity!
Heart to Heart Quiz Night at Cages
Wow. We had an amazing turnout for our 2nd Heart to Heart Quiz night on March 5. We had just a FEW more participants (say 100 more) than we had even remotely dreamed of. It was GREAT! Despite the scrambling that had to be done at the last minute and the delay it created in getting started, we hope everyone had as much fun as the H2H team did. Thank you so much for coming out for Heart to Heart. Heart to Heart would like to say a huge thank you to Ned Kelly for being the best quizmaster ever. We love it that he donates his time for us several times a year. And a big thank you to Cages for hosting the quiz, supplying the venue, donating welcome beers and donating part of the back bar take. Cages has even started talking about expanding the room size to 250 for our next quiz so that we can have plenty of non-crowded seating for everyone. We’re glad they’re on board with our mission to help children get the heart surgery they need. Heart to Heart would have a much harder job if it wasn’t for great sponsors like Ned and Cages.
Although Ned and Cages were instrumental in making the evening a success, we thank everyone who came and risked their egos by going against all the brilliant teams that came out to play. And play they did – A big congratulations to G.G.I., Ben’s Gang Green and Epstein’s Massage Service for making the quiz look easy, although it wasn’t. I know I’ll never look at fruit in the same way. I’ll always wonder where it’s from…. and fail to remember. Anyway, I hope our 3 winners enjoy their prizes. I know the child who benefits from heart surgery from Heart to Heart as a result of the quiz will be able to enjoy life a lot more because of your commitment to H2H. Thank you.
Even before hearing the total donation from Cages, we have already received RMB 10,555 from the registration fee for all the quiz participants. Fantastic! It will go a long way towards that heart surgery. We’ll be in touch with the participants, Ned and Cages and hopefully, some of them will be able to come in to visit the child after the surgery.
We love quiz!
SEA Coffee Mornings Resume – Yay!
The first SEA Coffee Morning each year is usually an exciting event for Heart to Heart — and hopefully for SEA members as well. It’s a time to see old friends returning from the CNY holiday. It’s a time to sell heart bears and recruit new SEA members to volunteer at H2H. It’s the time the SEA raffles the first bear (#1) of the limited edition (20 are made) Year of the ? bear. And it’s just fun. This year the raffle of the Year of the Ox bear brought in RMB 4,500! That plus the extremely generous SEA donation that was given to Heart to Heart during the morning will sponsor more than a child for heart surgery. In other words, it was a GREAT morning!
We thank the SEA for being a donor and sponsor of Heart to Heart since 2005. You have changed so many lives! And thanks to all the SEA members who volunteer with H2H – some of them are pictured here. It takes all of us working together to make Heart to Heart a success.
Continued Partnershp with Innocent Drinks
It’s official now. Heart to Heart and Innocent Drinks will continue to cooperate with each other during 2021. We had a successful year together in 2020 with H2H making Innocent Drink hats and Innocent advertising us on their products and making an additional donation to help sponsor a child. We will have a similar relationship in 2021. So, if you’re a knitter and would like to help knit little hats for the drinks, use your imagination and start knitting! We need about 9,000 more! If you need a drink bottle to measure how big they should be, let us know and we’ll get one to you or you can always go to the shop and try one of their delicious smoothies yourself and then save the bottle. They are in many cities in China now and, of course, the UK and Europe.
Message from the School Team
Spring is finally here. If you are trying to figure out how your school can work with Heart to Heart to help save some precious children’s lives, just drop us a note at firstname.lastname@example.org. We have a small, but dedicated team who would love to work with you to figure it out. Plus, we are always available to introduce your school to Heart to Heart if you’ve never worked with us before. We can send speakers in English, Chinese and French. And, if any of you out there would like to be school liaisons between your and/or your children’s school and Heart to Heart, please contact us and we’ll get you signed up. We love to work with schools and want to make that pleasure available to as many of you as possible.
Message from the Events Team
Spring 2021 is set to be a season of celebratory service for the H2H events team!
The H2H events team has had an unusually quiet few months, but things are heating back up along with the weather and the next few months promise to be action packed. While we have not had as many events this winter, the events team has also continued to welcome new members who, along with veteran team members, must be anxious for more chances to represent H2H out in the community and raise money for surgeries.
Events have already been scheduled for April – an Easter egg hunt, community bazars, sports tournaments, school fundraisers – and more continue to be added to the calendar. Members of the events team can sign up to volunteer via the signup link found in the team WeChat group. Questions about signing up (or anything else events related) can be directed to Harrison (email@example.com) or posted directly in the WeChat group. If you are not a member of the events team but are interested in volunteering at H2H events, that’s great! If you are not yet an H2H volunteer, please sign up on the H2H website (https://www.h2hsh.com/application/). If you are already an H2H volunteer on another team, please contact Harrison, Karen (Karen-H2H) or Ella (ellafly) to get added as an events team member in the H2H system and the WeChat group.
The events team is also actively searching for more event opportunities across Shanghai. We are always happy to hear ideas about possible events we could attend in the community. If you know about an event that you think would be good for H2H to attend, please reach out to Harrison through the events team email. If you have contacts for the event, all the better, but fresh ideas alone are also accepted. Events could include bazaars, school events, corporate events looking for charity partners, and more. Community members like you suggesting new events and partnerships for H2H is a tremendous way to help us continue to spread the word about H2H to new people and ultimately support more children. The events team is looking forward to hearing from you.

Battle of the Bands is Returning – School Bands Get Ready!
All indications are that the Battle of the Bands benefitting Heart to Heart will be returning this spring. It took a short hiatus last year, but people in the know are telling us that we should have a comeback battle in its normal Jinqiao location on May 16. This is great news for Heart to Heart and also fantastic for any school bands who are looking to prove they are the best in the city. The competition will be open to true school bands or to bands of individuals under 19 years old. So be brave and show us what you’re made of. We love this competition. Just write to email@example.com or (WeChat) Karen-H2H to get connected to the Battle of the Bands information committee that is being organized.
A Second Batch of Tibetans Had Surgery!
There is something special and wonderful about every child who has heart surgery through Heart to Heart. There are many that each of us will never forget. But there is definitely something very special about Tibetan children when we encounter them. It has been true for years and was true once again with the group of 23 who just came in on March 1. Most of them have already finished their procedures and have gone back to Tibet, but their smiles will live on in our memories for years to come. Thank you to all the sponsors who donated your hard earned money to make the life changes happen for these wonderful children.
Farewell from Janine Haefeli
I moved to Shanghai from Sydney in 2017 not knowing what to expect from such a crazy vibrant and exciting city, but ready for an adventure. Through another expat I found Heart to Heart and when I came to Yoda, I found the Tuesday assembly mornings bustling with some amazing volunteers all living and enjoying life here, ready not only to help this wonderful charity, but to have some fun!
Living in Shanghai is a gift and I wanted every day to count. Being a volunteer at H2H gave me this opportunity, with all that they offer as you can get involved in quiz, book club, bingo nights, dog show, etc… the list goes on! Volunteering at H2H has helped me get involved and given me so much joy and the opportunity to meet some amazing people.
Participating in visiting children after their surgery in their home environment on H2H field trips has been life changing for me. The privilege of being allowed into private homes in a very real and rural setting outside of Shanghai is an absolute gift and has been the highlight of my time here for which I am truly blessed.
DJ, Karen, Nancy and all of the amazing volunteers have supported me, help me settle in Shanghai, made me laugh hysterically, cry and, of course, shop, just like a family do! Without them my life here in Shanghai would not have been half of what it has been!
And so it is with a very heavy heart that I leave Shanghai and my H2H family! I know that I will always continue to do something for H2H and knitting bear pullovers wherever I am in the world, my little donations will continue to help support the wonderful children that come through the door!
In German we say Auf Wiedersehen which is to see you again and that is how i feel about leaving Shanghai, as I know that I will be back!
Featured Volunteer of the Month: Allan McDeanMy Chinese adventure started way back in 1994 in Brisbane Australia when my employer offered me a transfer to China on the contract conditions that if I didn’t like it after 1-year I could return to my comfortable 9-5 Australian life.
I started that journey with an initial trip to Shanghai for a look to see if i would be interested. Obviously, I was and within a matter of weeks, a much younger me, arrived with 2 suitcases and found myself standing on the corner of Huaihai and Maoming Lu trying to summon the courage to step off the kerb into the constant flow of bicycles and make my way to the office. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be still crossing Huaihai Lu 26-years later.
Good old Shanghai, a town that in the mid 1990’s had no mobile phones, the internet was in its infancy, and the metro consisted of 8 stops on Line 1. I have been fortunate enough to watch Shanghai and China in general merge into what they have become today. It has been a rocket ship ride, occasionally a love-hate relationship, but overall an exciting and occasionally a frustrating time. I can assure you that the China of the mid-1990’s was nothing like the China of the 2020’s.
I have been volunteering in various organisations for over 30-years. From a previous volunteering position here in Shanghai, Karen, DJ and I often crossed paths at events and fundraisers. H2H was well known to me. It wasn’t until I joined the H2H volunteering team that my eyes opened to the extent of the exceptional work the organisation does. The hard working management and the dedication of all volunteers is an inspiration and shows there is good in the world. When Karen posts reports on the children and families that H2H has helped, everybody can feel extremely proud that their volunteering has helped to achieve those results. Well done everybody.
Rather than a just picture of myself, I thought you might find it interesting in some pics I have dug out of my archives.
